Matter vs. Thread vs. Wi-Fi vs. Zigbee, Explained Simply

If you've started shopping for motorized shades, you've probably run into a wall of acronyms: Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread, Matter, hub, bridge, border router. None of it is actually complicated - it's just rarely explained in plain English. This guide breaks down what each of these four words really means, what changes for you as a shade owner, and how to tell which one you need without an engineering degree.

The short version
Wi-Fi and Zigbee are two different ways your shades can connect to your home network - think of them as two different roads. Thread is a newer, low-power road built specifically for smart home devices. Matter isn't a road at all - it's a shared language that lets devices from different brands understand each other once they're on one of those roads (Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet).
In other words: Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Thread decide how your shade's signal travels. Matter decides whether your shade can be controlled by any app you want, regardless of which brand made it.

Wi-Fi: the one you already have
Wi-Fi motors connect straight to your home router, the same way your laptop or phone does. There's no separate hub to buy or set up - you add the shade to an app and it just works. The tradeoff is that every shade is talking directly to your router, so in a large house, shades far from the router can see a weaker signal.
The bigger tradeoff is battery life. Wi-Fi uses meaningfully more power than Zigbee or Thread - enough that a battery-powered Wi-Fi sensor typically needs recharging every few months, where a Zigbee equivalent can run for a couple of years on the same battery (source). That's why Wi-Fi motorized shades are almost always sold as 110V plug-in or hardwired models rather than battery-powered ones - the power draw doesn't fit a compact rechargeable battery well. If you need a battery-powered shade for a window with no nearby outlet, that alone often settles the choice toward Zigbee or Thread.

Zigbee: the network smart homes have used for years
Zigbee is a low-power signal built specifically for smart-home devices. Devices can pass the signal along to their neighbors, so coverage gets better as you add more of them - but only devices that stay plugged in and always on can do that passing-along, which rules out your shades. Battery motors sleep between commands, and even 24V-wired motors mostly just listen for commands instead of relaying them. So what actually extends your coverage is always-on devices like smart plugs. Somfy sells a Zigbee smart plug just for this, and it's worth adding one or two if your shades sit far from the hub.
The bigger catch: not every Zigbee device talks to every Zigbee hub the same way. Zigbee does have a shared set of rules devices are supposed to follow, but in practice, brands often add their own extras for things like precise shade position or favorite stops, and most hubs only fully support their own brand's devices. That's a big part of why the industry created Matter: one shared language that works the same way across every brand, running over Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet.

Thread: Zigbee's newer sibling, built for today's internet
Thread solves the same problem as Zigbee - a low-power network for smart devices - but it's newer, and built to work more naturally with the internet. That's why most of the industry - Apple, Google, Amazon, and the Thread Group itself - is investing in it as the long-term successor to Zigbee.
To reach the internet, a Thread network needs one always-on device acting as a translator, called a border router. You probably already have one without knowing it: many HomePod minis, Google Nest Hubs, and Wi-Fi routers (like Eero) do this automatically in the background, and some (not all) Apple TV models do too.
The same rule as Zigbee applies: only always-on devices can pass along the signal for others. Battery and low-voltage shade motors just check in and listen for commands - they don't relay for anyone else. If your shades sit far from that border-router device, adding an always-on Thread device (a smart plug, or certain smart speakers) extends your coverage, the same way Somfy's Zigbee smart plug does for a Zigbee setup.

Matter: the language, not the road
Matter is the newest piece, and the one people mix up most. It's not a network like the other three - it's a shared "language" that smart devices speak once they're already connected to one of those networks. A Matter-certified shade motor can be controlled from Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings - your choice, not the manufacturer's - without ever swapping out the motor itself.
Matter works over Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet. A "Matter over Thread" motor, like the ones Yamazing carries, combines Thread's low-power network with Matter's ability to work with any app - which is why it's becoming the standard combination for new smart home devices.

"Any app" does come with a few real catches worth knowing before you buy. Adding a device to a second app means pairing it again with a fresh code - not instant, and not automatic. Each app also wants its own "home base" device present: a HomePod or Apple TV for Apple Home, a Nest speaker or display for Google Home, an Echo for Alexa. And until recently, devices from different brands used to create entirely separate Thread networks - so an Apple HomePod mini and a Google Nest Hub might not even see the same devices, which is exactly the "can't use Google with an Apple HomePod" problem some early adopters have run into. A 2024 update to the Thread standard (Thread 1.4) is meant to fix this by letting devices from any brand share one network instead of splitting into separate ones, but real-world support still varies by device. So "no new hardware" is a safer promise for the shade motor itself than for a perfectly smooth experience switching between apps today.
So which one should you actually pick?
If you just want a handful of shades you can open and close from your phone with the least setup, and there's power at the window, Wi-Fi is the simplest starting point - no hub required. Just know it's almost always a plug-in or hardwired option, not a battery one.
If you're automating a whole home or want the longest battery life on battery-powered shades, Zigbee is a proven, mature choice - through Yamazing's own Smart Home Hub, or through Somfy's TaHoma hub if you're already invested in Somfy's ecosystem (TaHoma, Control4, Crestron).
If you want the most future-proof setup - one that works natively with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings without a brand-specific app, and that's where the industry is heading - Matter over Thread is the newest and most flexible option.
