How Matter over Thread Works: Three Homes, Step by Step

A Thread network runs on post. Your command is a letter, your shades keep mailboxes, and a few always-on devices do the carrying. Once you see it that way, everything else about Matter over Thread - why you might need a smart plug, why a shade takes a moment to respond, what breaks when you unplug something - follows from it.

The whole thing is a postal service

In our first guide we explained what Matter and Thread are. This one shows what actually happens when you tap "Close", in three real homes - a condo with five shades, a longer house with fifteen, and a large home with thirty. Every diagram is animated: watch a letter make its trip, and in the two bigger homes, unplug things to see how the post keeps running.
Here is the entire idea, and the rest of this post is just detail.
Your phone writes a letter: close the living room shades. It hands that letter to a post office - one always-on device that sits where your Wi-Fi meets the shades' own network. From there, carriers move it along: other always-on devices, each passing it a little closer.
The letter doesn't get delivered to the shade, though. Your shades are asleep almost all the time, because that's how a battery lasts years instead of weeks. So each shade keeps a mailbox at the nearest always-on device, and its mail waits there. Every so often the shade wakes up, checks its box, takes whatever is inside, and acts on it.
That single fact explains most of what follows. A sleeping shade can't carry mail for anyone else, so adding shades never improves your coverage. Only the carriers do that.

Why “border router”, of all things

The post office has an unfortunate official name: the border router. It's less mysterious than it sounds. A router, in networking, is anything that passes messages between two networks. This one stands on the border between two of them - your ordinary Wi-Fi on one side, the shades' Thread network on the other. A router on the border. That's the whole etymology.
It's also not a product you buy. It's a job, and a device you already own is probably doing it: a smart speaker, a streaming box, some Wi-Fi routers, any serious hub. The table further down lists which ones.

Home 1: One border router, five shades

This is a condo, or a single open living area. Every shade is within reach of one border router - a smart speaker on a shelf, say - so that one device does both jobs at once: it's the post office where mail arrives, and it holds the mailbox for all five shades. No carriers needed, nothing else to buy.

The shaded circle is roughly how far the border router reaches. All five shades sit inside it, so all five keep their boxes there. The faint blips are shades checking for mail.
  1. You tap “Close” in the Home app, and the letter travels over Wi-Fi.
  2. Your Wi-Fi router drops it at the border router — the post office.
  3. The shade is asleep, so the letter waits in its box there.
  4. The shade wakes on schedule, checks its box, and closes.

One post office means one point of failure

The trade-off of a one-device setup is that there's no backup. The Thread Group puts it plainly: with a single border router, if it loses power "there is no means to switch to an alternative." App and voice control come back as soon as it does.
Your shades don't go dead in the meantime, though. Yamazing remotes talk to the motor directly over their own RF433 radio, which has nothing to do with Thread, Wi-Fi or your internet connection. If the network is out, the remote on the wall still raises and lowers the shade.
Why the pause? Your letter waits in the box until the shade next checks it, so the first command after a quiet spell can take a moment longer. Right after it moves, a shade stays awake for a while, which is why the second command feels instant.

Home 2: Fifteen shades, one border router, two smart plugs

Now picture a longer home: a living room with the border router in it, bedrooms down a hallway, an office at the far end. The office shades are too far away to keep a box at the post office. They need carriers.
That's what a smart plug is doing here. Plugged in along the hallway, it picks mail up and carries it further. A Matter-over-Thread plug costs under ten dollars and doesn't have to match the brand of anything else. Now a letter for the office goes post office, plug A, plug B, and waits in a box at plug B until that shade checks it.

Try it. Unplug plug B and the nearer shades move their boxes to plug A on their own - but the office shades have nothing else in reach, so their mail stops. Unplug plug A instead and everything past it is cut off: plug B is still running, but no mail can reach it from the post office.

  4. The shade checks its box, collects it, and moves.

Getting carriers right

Put them in between. A carrier does the most good about halfway between the post office and the shades it serves.
Use an outlet that's always on. Not one controlled by a wall switch. A plug that loses power stops carrying, and anything that depended on it goes quiet.
Mains power matters. Only always-on devices carry mail. A battery sensor or button sleeps like your shades do, so it extends nothing, however well placed.
Check that it's actually carrying. Mains-powered Thread devices usually do, but plenty of manufacturers never say so on the box. An app with Thread diagnostics will show you each device's role.

Home 3: Thirty shades, three border routers, a few smart plugs

Larger homes usually end up with several devices that can be a border router, without anyone planning it: a streaming box in the family room, a speaker in the kitchen, another upstairs. They don't open three rival postal services. As long as they're in the same smart home, extra border routers join the network that already exists - Apple's guidance for its own devices is that more of them improve the network's resiliency. So the neighbourhood has three post offices instead of one, and with a few smart plugs carrying between them, there's more than one route to almost every shade.

Turn a device off and the shades that kept boxes there find new ones on their own, while mail comes in through a post office that’s still open. In a real home that takes anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. The diagram speeds it up.

Why spread things out

This is what the Thread standard is designed to do. If the device holding a shade's mailbox disappears, the shade "can and will select another" one, and the Thread Group's own summary is that the failure "should not be visible to the user." Nobody re-pairs anything.
Even if every shade could reach one speaker, you wouldn't want all thirty mailboxes at the same address. Each always-on device can only hold mail for a limited number of sleeping devices. The exact number depends on the device, and Apple doesn't publish one for its hardware; common Thread software defaults run from 10 to 64. Spreading carriers through the house spreads the boxes out too, and gives every shade somewhere nearby to move if its device goes away.

Planning your own home

Start with what you have. Check the table above. If one of those devices is already in your house, you already have a border router.
Add carriers where shades are far away. A far wing, a second floor, or a room behind thick walls. There's no official range figure for Thread, because walls and materials change it so much, so plan by rooms rather than feet.
A second post office is a backup, not a requirement. One border router works fine. Two or three mean a single unplugged speaker doesn't stop the mail.
