Add your Dream Drapery to Apple Home
This guide puts your motorized Dream Drapery in the Apple Home app with both controls: slide it open or closed, and tilt the vanes. It takes about two hours the first time and needs a small Home Assistant box on your network.
The drapery motor runs on the Smart Life (Tuya) platform, which Apple Home can’t talk to directly. Home Assistant sits in between: it controls the motor over your Wi-Fi and presents it to Apple Home as a window covering.
What you get
Two things to know before you start:
- There is no “open to 40%” for the slide. The motor accepts open, close and stop for the traverse. To stop partway, press stop.
- Open or Closed is remembered, not measured. The motor doesn’t report where the drapery is on the track, so Apple Home shows the last command it sent. If you use the handheld remote, the tile can be out of step until the next command. The tilt angle is always accurate.
What you need
Keep everything on one network. Guest networks and separate VLANs stop Apple Home from finding Home Assistant.
You do not need a Tuya developer account.
Set up Home Assistant
Skip this step if you already run Home Assistant.
On a Home Assistant Green: connect Ethernet and power, wait a few minutes, then open http://homeassistant.local:8123 in a browser.
On a Raspberry Pi:
- 1
Install Raspberry Pi Imager on your computer and insert the microSD card.
- 2
Select your Pi model under Choose Device. Then Choose OS > Other specific-purpose OS > Home assistants and home automation > Home Assistant, and pick Home Assistant OS for your model.
- 3
Select the card under Choose Storage and write it.
- 4
Put the card in the Pi, connect Ethernet, and power on.
- 5
Open http://homeassistant.local:8123. The first start downloads the latest version and can take up to 20 minutes.
Then follow the onboarding screens: create your login, name the home, and set the location.
Install HACS and Tuya Local
Tuya Local is the free community add-on that talks to the drapery motor directly over your Wi-Fi. It is installed through HACS, Home Assistant’s community store.
Install HACS
- 1
In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Apps > Install app (called Add-ons on older versions).
- 2
Open the three-dot menu, choose Repositories, and add
https://github.com/hacs/addons. - 3
Select Get HACS (Home Assistant Community Store), then Install, then Start.
- 4
Restart Home Assistant: Settings > System > Restart.
- 5
Go to Settings > Devices & services, refresh the page, and select + Add integration. Search for HACS and select it.
- 6
Tick the acknowledgements and select Submit.
- 7
Home Assistant shows a device code. Open https://github.com/login/device, sign in to GitHub, paste the code, and select Authorize HACS.
- 8
Back in Home Assistant, select Finish.
The HACS download instructions have screenshots if a screen looks different.
Install Tuya Local
- 1
Open HACS from the sidebar and search for
Tuya Local. Pick the one from make-all/tuya-local. A similarly named “LocalTuya” is a different project. - 2
If it isn’t listed, open the three-dot menu at the top right, choose Custom repositories, paste
https://github.com/make-all/tuya-local, set the type to Integration, and add it. Then search again. - 3
Open it and select Download.
- 4
Restart Home Assistant again. Tuya Local won’t appear until you do.
Add the Dream Drapery device profile
Tuya Local needs a small profile file that tells it how this motor works. Without it, the controls only tilt the vanes and the drapery never slides.
- 1
Download novo_q1_verticalblinds.yaml to your computer. If the browser shows the text instead of saving it, right-click the link and choose Save Link As. Keep the file name exactly as it is.
- 2
In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Apps > Install app, install File editor, start it, and turn on Show in sidebar.
- 3
Open File editor and select the folder icon at the top left.
- 4
Browse to
custom_components/tuya_local/devices/. - 5
Select the upload icon and choose the file you downloaded.
- 6
Restart Home Assistant.
Keep a copy of the file. An update to Tuya Local can remove it from that folder; if the drapery stops responding after an update, upload it again and restart. We have asked the Tuya Local project to include this motor, which will make this step unnecessary once it is accepted.
Add your drapery to Tuya Local
You sign in with your Smart Life account once, and Tuya Local fetches what it needs to reach the motor.
- 1
In the Smart Life app, go to Me, tap the gear icon, then Account and Security. Note the User Code at the bottom. It is case sensitive.
- 2
In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Devices & services > + Add integration and choose Tuya Local.
- 3
For Setup choice, pick SmartLife cloud-assisted device setup and continue.
- 4
Enter the User Code. Home Assistant shows a QR code.
- 5
In Smart Life, tap +, choose Scan, scan the code, and confirm the login. Then continue in Home Assistant.
- 6
Under Choose device, pick your drapery. Leave Choose gateway on None.
- 7
Wait while Tuya Local finds the motor on your network (up to 20 seconds), then confirm the connection details it filled in.
- 8
Under Device type, pick the entry ending in
(novo_q1_verticalblinds). - 9
Give it a name, such as
Living Room Drapery, and finish.
Repeat steps 2 to 9 for each drapery. You only scan the QR code once per session.
Check that it works
Open the new device and select the drapery’s name to open its controls.
- Open, close and stop should slide the drapery.
- The tilt slider should rotate the vanes.
The state will read Unknown here. That is expected, and Step 5 fixes it.
Create the combined drapery control
This adds a second control on top of the Tuya Local one. It remembers whether the drapery was last opened or closed, so Apple Home can show Open or Closed, and it passes the tilt through.
Find the entity ID
- 1
Go to Settings > Devices & services > Tuya Local and open your drapery.
- 2
Select the drapery’s name under Controls, then the gear icon.
- 3
Copy the Entity ID. It looks like
cover.living_room_drapery.
Add the control
- 1
Open File editor, select the folder icon, and open
configuration.yaml. - 2
Paste the block below at the end of the file.
- 3
Replace
cover.living_room_draperywith your entity ID in all five places. - 4
Save, then go to Developer tools > YAML and select Template entities to reload. If that option isn’t listed, restart Home Assistant.
template:
- cover:
- name: "Dream Drapery"
unique_id: dream_drapery_living_room
device_class: curtain
optimistic: true
open_cover:
- action: cover.open_cover
target:
entity_id: cover.living_room_drapery
close_cover:
- action: cover.close_cover
target:
entity_id: cover.living_room_drapery
stop_cover:
- action: cover.stop_cover
target:
entity_id: cover.living_room_drapery
tilt: "{{ state_attr('cover.living_room_drapery', 'current_tilt_position') | int(0) }}"
set_cover_tilt_position:
- action: cover.set_cover_tilt_position
target:
entity_id: cover.living_room_drapery
data:
tilt_position: "{{ tilt }}"Notes on the block:
- Spacing matters. Keep the indentation exactly as shown, using spaces and not tabs.
- More than one drapery: copy everything from
- name:down, paste it below at the same indentation, and give each copy its ownname,unique_idand entity ID. - If the file already has a
template:line, don’t add a second one. Put the- cover:part under the existing line.
You now have a new entity called Dream Drapery. Test open, close, stop and tilt on it before moving on.
Connect to Apple Home
HomeKit Bridge is built into Home Assistant. It publishes the combined control to the Home app.
- 1
Go to Settings > Devices & services > + Add integration and choose HomeKit Bridge.
- 2
Under Domains to include, select only cover, and finish the dialog.
- 3
Find HomeKit Bridge in the list and select Configure. Set Inclusion mode to include, then select only the combined Dream Drapery control from Step 5. Leave the Tuya Local one out, or the Home app will show two tiles for each drapery.
- 4
Open Notifications (the bell icon) in Home Assistant. It shows a pairing QR code and PIN.
- 5
On your iPhone, on the same Wi-Fi, open Home > + > Add Accessory and scan the code.
- 6
Tap Add Anyway at the uncertified-accessory warning, then assign the drapery to a room.
In the Home app, tap the tile to open or close. Touch and hold it for the tilt control. The main slider works as a three-way control: near the top opens, near the bottom closes, and the middle stops. Ask Siri to “open the drapery”, or add it to scenes such as Good Morning.
If something isn’t right
custom_components/tuya_local/devices/ with its exact name, then restartKeeping it running
- Leave Home Assistant powered and connected. Apple Home reaches the drapery through it.
- Your remote and the Smart Life app keep working alongside Apple Home.
- Install Home Assistant updates when it offers them, and turn on automatic backups under Settings > System > Backups.
- If you re-pair the motor in Smart Life, delete it from Tuya Local and repeat Step 4, because re-pairing changes the motor’s local key.
